Hydrothermal Explosion Rocks Yellowstone National Park
Visitors Run for Safety as Geyser Erupts
Boiling Water, Mud, and Rock Soar into Air
A hydrothermal explosion has sent a towering column of boiling water, mud, and rock into the air at Yellowstone National Park. Visitors in the area ran for safety as the geyser erupted north of the Old Faithful geyser basin.
The park has experienced similar explosions in the past. In 1989, the Porkchop Geyser in Norris Geyser Basin erupted violently, sending hot water and debris flying into the air. Today's explosion is a reminder of the power of Yellowstone's geothermal features.
