Bugs, Mold, and Mildew Found in Boar's Head Plant Linked to Deadly Listeria Outbreak
What Happened?
A deadly listeria outbreak has been linked to a Boar's Head plant in Illinois.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed that seven people have died and at least 16 others have been hospitalized in connection with the outbreak.
The contaminated products include sliced deli meats and cheeses, such as ham, turkey, roast beef, and American cheese.
What is Listeria?
Listeriosis is a bloodstream infection caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. It can cause serious health problems, including:
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- In severe cases, meningitis, and death
Who is Most at Risk?
People at highest risk for listeriosis include:
- Pregnant women and their newborns
- People over the age of 65
- People with weakened immune systems
What Should You Do?
If you have purchased Boar's Head sliced deli meats or cheeses, you should:
- Check the product label to see if it is included in the recall list.
- If it is, discard it immediately.
- Do not eat any of the recalled products.
- Contact your doctor if you have any symptoms of Listeria
