Kamala Harris: Her Journey to the White House

Early Life and Education

Kamala Devi Harris was born in Oakland, California, on October 20, 1964. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a cancer researcher from India, and her father, Donald Harris, was an economics professor from Jamaica. Harris's parents met while they were both studying at the University of California, Berkeley. They divorced when Harris was seven years old, and she was raised by her mother and stepfather, David Harris.

Harris attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she earned a bachelor's degree in political science and economics. She then went on to earn a law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Career

After graduating from law school, Harris worked as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. She later served as the District Attorney of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011. In 2010, Harris was elected as the Attorney General of California, a position she held until 2017.

As Attorney General, Harris focused on criminal justice reform, environmental protection, and consumer protection. She also played a leading role in the fight against climate change.

2020 Presidential Election

In January 2019, Harris announced her candidacy for President of the United States. She ran on a platform of progressive values, including universal healthcare, a living wage, and action on climate change. Harris was a top contender in the Democratic primaries, but she ultimately dropped out of the race in December 2019.

Despite her loss, Harris remained a prominent figure in the Democratic Party. She was chosen to be Joe Biden's running mate in the 2020 presidential election. Biden and Harris won the election, and Harris became the first woman, the first Black person, and the first South Asian person to serve as Vice President of the United States.

As Vice President, Harris has focused on issues such as voting rights, criminal justice reform, and the economy. She has also been a vocal advocate for women's rights and the LGBTQ community.
